- Family sponsorship
01Family reunification: the principle
Sponsorship is a commitment by which a sponsor agrees, toward the government, to provide for the essential needs of the sponsored person for a set period. In exchange, the sponsored person may obtain permanent residence.
The sponsor must be a citizen or permanent resident, at least 18 years old, and meet income and capacity conditions. The undertaking is a legal commitment, not mere moral support: it survives divorce or relationship breakdown in the case of spouses.
02Sponsoring a spouse or partner
You may sponsor a spouse, conjugal partner or interdependent partner, provided the relationship is genuine and not entered into primarily for immigration. Proof of the relationship is central: cohabitation, shared finances, testimonials, photos.
Spousal sponsorship carries a financial undertaking whose duration depends on the situation. A common-law relationship must meet specific duration and cohabitation conditions. Excluded relationships (for example when the sponsor is not eligible) must be checked case by case.
03Sponsoring dependent children
Dependent children can be sponsored. The definition of a dependent child rests on age and marital status at the time of filing: in principle, unmarried and under the age threshold, or dependent for medical reasons. Verifying the child’s eligibility is essential.
A child accompanying a sponsored parent may be included in the application. A child sponsored separately is a distinct file, with its own conditions.
04Sponsoring parents and grandparents (PGP)
The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) works through an interest system: potential sponsors submit an interest form, and IRCC selects a limited number of sponsors to submit an application. This mechanism differs from spousal sponsorship.
Sponsoring parents and grandparents carries a 20-year undertaking and a Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) threshold to meet for three consecutive years. The number of spots is limited each year: interest does not guarantee selection.
05Minimum necessary income (MNI)
For the PGP, the sponsor must show income at least equal to the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for the size of their family unit, for three consecutive years. The thresholds are published by IRCC and updated: refer to the official scale in force rather than a fixed figure.
Income is proven through Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency. Falling short of the threshold disqualifies the sponsorship. The super visa is an alternative for parents who do not meet the PGP or who want a long stay without permanent residence.
06The undertaking
The undertaking is a contract with the government. The sponsor agrees to repay any social assistance paid to the sponsored person during the undertaking period. This duration varies by sponsorship type and can reach 20 years for parents.
The undertaking does not end at relationship breakdown and is not limited to the waiting period. Before sponsoring, measure the scope of this commitment: it binds your finances for many years.
07Timelines and steps
Processing times vary by category, country of origin and application volume. They are not guaranteed. A complete and consistent application is processed faster than an incomplete file that must be supplemented.
For the PGP, the selection stage precedes filing: the schedule depends on interest periods opened by IRCC. For spouses, the path is continuous: filing, review, decision. Preparing documents reduces requests for additional information.
08Special cases
Special rules apply to orphans, close relatives in certain situations, and adopted children. International adoption conventions can make the file more complex. Each special case must be checked in detail.
Family reunification also has limits: a sponsor in bankruptcy, below the income threshold, or who has already breached an undertaking may be ineligible. Verifying your eligibility as a sponsor is the first step, before any process.
In conclusion
Sponsorship is a heavy, legal and long-term commitment, not a simple act of generosity. The preparation of the sponsor (income, eligibility) and of the file (proof of relationship, financial documents) determines the real success of the application. No process guarantees a result.
Before committing as a sponsor, have your eligibility and the strength of your file assessed. FamiVisa offers a free, confidential assessment of your sponsorship situation.
