Express Entry: what the 2026 categories change

On February 18, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the selection categories that will guide Express Entry draws in 2026, as part of its talent attraction strategy. One notable change affects all occupational categories: the required work experience in an eligible occupation rises to twelve months within the last three years, up from six months.

What was announced

Category-based selection lets IRCC invite Express Entry pool candidates who meet a specific economic goal — such as French-language proficiency or in-demand occupations — rather than only the highest CRS scores.

For 2026, the category framework was updated by news release: the government says it wants to focus invitations on the most sought-after talent. The official, current list of active categories is published on IRCC's category-based selection page.

The experience requirement rises to 12 months

To qualify under an occupational category, candidates must now show at least twelve months of work experience in an eligible occupation within the last three years. This experience does not have to be continuous.

Before this change, six months of experience was enough for most categories. Candidates who counted on a short stint in a targeted occupation must revisit their strategy: only the French-language proficiency category is not subject to this occupational requirement.

Reminder: job offer points are gone

Since March 2025, CRS points for arranged employment (a qualifying job offer) have been removed. Candidates can no longer rely on the 50 or 200 points a validated offer used to bring: the score now rests more heavily on language, education, Canadian experience and category-based selection.

What this means for your profile

The same CRS score may now be enough or not depending on the categories you qualify for. Checking your eligibility for the categories — French proficiency, healthcare, trades, education or other active categories — is part of profile analysis, alongside the score calculation itself.

Categories and eligible occupations are reviewed every year: the information above reflects IRCC announcements as of their publication date and may change.
